Clothing Wonderland! (My thrift shop experience)
I love clothes and I love buying things. Money is slim for me. I recently moved away from home and haven't quite settled down enough to go job searching. So thrift shopping is way more useful to me now more than ever. However, that is not why I do it. I could be rich and I would still enjoy a good thrifting. "Why?" You ask. Well let me tell you.
Thrift Shopping is like a lucky dip. Usually we go into branded shops where they have their specific style and we can expect a certain type of clothing there. When you're in a second hand shop you get a variety of clothes from different brands and places. I do admit, some thrift shops are better than others, so you wont always find the dime in the dozen. Part of the fun is being able to go searching for the treasure (a.k.a that one thing that catches your attention and you want it).
Some people avoid thrift shopping because it is socially generalised as something people do when they can't afford brand new clothing. They are afraid it will bruise their reputation. Others worry that the clothes aren't hygienic to wear. My opinion on this is that many people find thrift shopping completely normal and if your clothes look nice then they probably don't care where they came from. In regards to the items being hygienic, I often go to places which are supporting bigger causes such as St. John's which is medical care support for people, they want to help, not harm. Second Hand stores usually wash their clothes and check for damage (holes and stains) before shelving them. If you are worried about the cleanliness then you can always go home and wash it before wearing it.
Here are some items I have picked up thrift shopping:
Studded Jacket - $6 (NZD)
This jacket is a short, crop top sized jacket. The sleeves are nice and long which is awesome because often small sized jackets come with annoying undersized sleeves. I have had this jacket for about five months now, it is in perfect condition and the studs have not fallen off at all. The down side is that to zip it up you have to unclip the studs so they unfold and you can't see them.
Fishnet Shirt - $4 (NZD)
I love this top because it is nice for showing off some skin. I wear a little black sports bra type thing under it so you can't directly see my actual bra. It is comfy because it isnt super tight. The downside is that the sleeves are a bit short on me.
Pastel Pink Dress - $10 (NZD)
I picked up this dress because I needed something to wear to a fancy movie night with friends where we all got in ball dresses and the guys in their tuxedos. This dress was amazing because it has a bra made into it so I didn't have to wear one with it. I think it just fell really nicely and the fabric feels lovely. The one downside to this is that there are some tiny stains on the lower part of the Dress, luckily they are very light stains so you don't really notice them.
Pink & White Tie Dye Shirt - $4 (NZD)
This shirt is soooool cute! I brought this about 5 days ago actually and I like it. It is a crop top which is actually branded from the shop Factorie. I was hooked when I saw it. The sleeves are really loose and it is very comfy. I haven't found a downside for this shirt yet, except maybe that since its white I have to be careful not to stain it.
Fishnet Tights - $1 (NZD)
These were in the $1 bin at a local second hand shop by me and I got them because I am pretty fishnet obsessed lately. I thought they were only thigh highs so was happy to see they were full tights. I got them with the idea they might not fit but they were only $1 so figured I would take the chance. The skirt is actually also second hand but I can't say how much it was because my friend (who actually got me into second hand shopping originally) bought it for me so I dont actually know.
Pastel Blue Pillow - $2 (NZD)
I was super happy about this grab because the pillow is so soft! As you can see it is quite big so I think it was pretty cheap for a pillow in perfect quality. No stains on it.
Holographic Horse Bag - $2
I love this little bag. It is super aesthetic and Tumblr when worn with the right things. Could also be seen as childish but oh well, I love it. Downside is that it is quite small inside so it won't carry much.
Tied Up Shirt - $4 (NZD)
I have no idea what to call this shirt so that's it there. It is a crop top with tank top like sleeves. I am really into these shirts that have that criss cross lace bit at the top. I think it really adds more and makes it less plain. The downside is this shirt is slightly tight on me and sp the back unraveled a little which i resewed so it is fine now. Luckily the material is stretchy so it's not uncomfortable and just fits.
There are so many more things I have bought and could show you but I would be here all day if I tried. I wanted to write this so you can see that there are cool things at thrift shops and they aren't all old people or poor people clothes. I hope this inspired you to stop in at a local thrift shop or take a look for one when you're traveling. Just browse through all the shelves/racks, try some things on or buy something spontaneously.
Embrace the thrift shop.
